Inlays and Onlays

A dental inlay or onlay may be the right therapy for you if you have a damaged tooth. These dental restorations can fill cavities in locations where traditional fillings would be ineffective. Inlays and onlays are both more durable than standard fillings.

What is an inlay or an onlay?

Inlays and onlays are a means of preserving teeth that have been damaged. The type of dental filler used may be determined by the type of tooth trauma involved.

An inlay is a tiny filling that is inserted into the tooth’s biting surface, whereas an onlay covers a wider region of the tooth and is better suited to larger cavities. Gold has been used to construct inlays and onlays for many years since it is a durable substance that lasts. Nowadays, tooth-coloured porcelain is used to give teeth a more natural look.

What is the procedure for an inlay or an onlay?

Thanks to digital technology, porcelain dental inlays and onlays can be made at the dental practice using a special milling machine. This means you’ll need to see the dentist less frequently to get your tooth fixed.

For the installation of inlays or onlays, an initial radiograph and evaluation are usually necessary. Your dentist will remove outdated filling material and restructure the tooth during your initial session. While your porcelain repair is being created, a scan will be taken and you will be given a temporary filling. The interim repair will be removed during the second session, and your onlay or inlay will be glued in place.

You will be wearing a temporary filling while they are being constructed. After removing the temporary filling, your dentist will put your inlay or onlay into place using a special adhesive.
