However, during pregnancy, it\u2019s more important than ever to pay close attention to your dental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Changes to Oral Health During Pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Toothache<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For expectant mums experiencing the dreaded morning sickness, you may be surprised to hear that you are far more likely to also experience toothaches in pregnancy &#8211; in comparison to those without regular morning sickness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is because the enamel begins to weaken when stomach acids are left on the surfaces of the teeth. Something that can reduce the likelihood of toothache in pregnancy is to regularly use acid-neutralising toothpaste to effectively eliminate stomach acids in the mouth that contribute to tooth erosion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hormone Changes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hormone changes during pregnancy can affect your oral health, and many pregnant women notice that their gums are red, inflamed and sometimes bleed when they brush their teeth. The swelling and inflamed gums are referred to as \u2018pregnancy gingivitis\u2019 and can start as soon as the second month of pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hormone progesterone can be around 10 times higher than normal during pregnancy, affecting the body\u2019s response to toxins as a result of plaque build-up. While they are not dangerous, they can cause discomfort.
